A Letter from our Golf Pro

The Palmer Course at Stonewall Resort is home to one of the newest Junior Golf Programs in the state. Our staff of Golf Professionals has created a program that will provide a fun, yet informational environment for juniors to learn the game of golf. The program will be led by Assistant Golf Professional Caitlyn Sturm, she is a certified U.S. Kids Golf Coach and is passionate about teaching the youth and helping them develop in golf and life. All juniors are welcome to join our program. We offer clinics, camps, individual and group lessons to students of all skill levels.

Returning to The Palmer Course in 2022 will be a PGA Jr League Team, “The Little Palmers”. To become a member of our team or for more information, please contact the golf shop. Visit the PGA Junior League website to learn more about the program as well: https://www.pgajrleague.com/

Our Professional Staff at The Palmer Course is dedicated to providing the most rewarding junior golf program in the area. We want to introduce the youth to the game and help junior golfers develop golf and life skills through competitive program and tournaments. Our program strives to create a fun environment that emphasizes athletic development, as well as focus on all aspects of the game. In fulfilling our mission, we believe, through participation the youth will be encouraged to value honesty and integrity, develop perseverance, self-confidence, patience, sportsmanship and enjoy the game of golf for a lifetime.

Junior Golf Levels

The professional staff has created a six-level system for junior golfers at The Palmer Course to track their progress as they develop in the game of golf.

This system will be every player's goal to work toward each season. This has been developed in conjunction with the U.S. Kids Golf Player Pathway and GA Coach stages. When starting, the junior golfer will start at Level One- Green and begin the process to complete each level. While going through each level, their progress will be tracked by the coach, along with the player on a poster in the golf shop.

After successfully completing all the required tasks and passing each test in the level, the student will mark off the achievement on the chart in the golf shop and they will also receive a sticker to place on their golf bag tag.

Level Topic Breakdown

PLAY: Each level will require a certain number of times a junior golfer must play. This can be with parents, other juniors, at The Palmer Course or other courses the junior may play at. Players will be required to turn in cards to help track dates of playing.

PRACTICE: Each level will require participants to practice, with the number of times and time length of the practice increasing during the different levels.

INSTRUCTION: The junior golfer is required to take a certain number of instruction lessons with each level, this will also increase as the level progresses. Students can receive private instruction, PGA Jr. League Practice (if a participant on the team), clinic days, and group instruction to reach required number required. This will be tracked in the golf shop by the professional staff.

SKILLS TEST: Putting, short game, and long game tests will be given to measure progress during each level. These will be administered by the professional staff and passing dates will be recorded for each player.

RULES/ETIQUETTE TEST: It is important that each player be aware of common rules and etiquette which is why each player will be required to pass a progressively harder test each level. This will help prepare our junior golfers to have the best experience while playing at our course, other courses, and in tournaments.

TERMS TEST: It is also important that each player knows the correct terms and what they mean with the game of golf. Like the rules and etiquette test it will get harder with each level.

TEE YARDAGE/TARGET SCORE: Each respective level is assigned a target score and a yardage or tee color to play from.

GENERAL AGE: This is simply a guideline, as students can go at their own pace depending on time and interest level.

Individual and group lessons are available anytime (30 and 60 minute available). For prices and more information contact Caitlin Sturm at 304.269.8884 or visit the golf shop.
