Best Team Building Activities: Mild & Wild

Stonewall Resort’s fun team-building exercises that fuel a little friendly competition, while also firing up the friendships

Segway or Kayak Relay Races 

Groups divide into teams and then have the choice of competing in a race on two wheels throughout the trails of the wooded 1,900-acre property or with paddles on the 2,600-acre Stonewall Jackson Lake.

“Fired Up” Cooking Competition

Stonewall’s culinary team divides the group into teams, provides them with all the necessary cooking accoutrements (ingredients, grills, stovetops), then tasks each team with preparing a different course with a provided recipe. All participants leave with an apron emblazoned with the Stonewall Resort logo.

Local Community Service

For groups that are looking to bond while contributing to a larger cause in the community, the resort can organize charitable efforts. Options include a build-a-bike workshop (all bikes that are built are then donated to children in need), highway cleanup, as well as playground maintenance (painting, rebuilding obstacles, etc.)

Geocaching Scavenger Hunt

Groups are given the coordinates to locate points of interest throughout the resort, including the unusual groupings of waist-high rock walls on the property’s Cairns Trail, the scenic overlook on the Overlook Trail, and the preserved 180-year-old log cabin from Roanoke’s pioneer days.

Guided Night Hike

The resort’s on-staff naturalist takes groups on nature walks on the cart paths of the golf course at night, when the region’s flora and fauna really come alive.

Beer, Bourbon & BBQ

Based in the ballroom, the resort sets up tables featuring local beer and bourbon for tasting, and pair it with your choice of a unique barbeque menu. Themes include “Memphis Barbeque,” “Kansas City Barbeque,” as well as “Not Your Average Protein” with unique sauces and twists like turducken (chicken stuffed into duck), wild hog leg, and more.

Yuengs & Wings

A rep from Yuengling (America’s oldest operating brewery established in 1829) comes to the resort and gives a talk on the history and brewing process before the main course – actually three courses of wings and fries paired with different Yuengling beers. For example: bacon jam wings and coconut lime fries paired with Yuengling Black & Tan.

Kickoff to New Orleans

This Mardis Gras–inspired event includes a menu of po’ boys, mufalettas, jambalaya, crawfish etoufee, as well as beaded décor, voodoo dolls at each place setting, and beignets served with coffee from Café du Monde (an iconic New Orleans café).

A Night at the Races

A NASCAR-simulated small-scale race track is set up in the middle of the ballroom, where colleagues race one another. Themed décor and track-themed food is also included.

Great Gatsby

A roaring ’20s–themed dinner headlines this event that features a red carpeted front entrance, red curtains, celebrity impersonators, and, of course, guests dressed in period costumes.

This buffet menu focuses on locally caught fish and meat, including cornmeal-dusted catfish, sweet tea– brined turkey breast, and hickory-smoked strip steak. Sides include creamed collard greens, West Virginia–style green beans, and sweet corn spoonbread.  

Southwestern Buffet Menu

Marrying southern flavors with spice, this Tex-Mex–themed dinner includes veggie quesadillas with spicy salsa, slow roasted pulled pork shoulder with salsa verde, and chicken burritos with green chili queso.

Lambert’s Winery

Nestled in the hills of Weston, West Virginia, this Old World–inspired winery built from hand-cut stones offers an on-site banquet facility seating 100 at handcrafted oak tables with a large wrap-around porch. A large grass area overlooking the vineyards is suitable for tents and tables for larger events.

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

Formerly known as the Weston State Hospital, this facility served as a sanctuary for the mentally ill in the mid-1800s and, today, holds fascinating stories of Civil War raids, a gold robbery, and the “curative” effects of architecture. The building features a front lawn great for tented events as well as other indoor spaces.

West Virginia State Wildlife Center

Located a half-hour away from Stonewall, this zoological park offers motor coach tours through the  property to come face-to-face with native species like river otter, elk, bison, mountain lion, and timber wolf. A picnic area offers tables, grills, and a pavilion with eight tables for dining amongst the wildlife.

Thyme Bistro

This small bistro available for rental may look like an unassuming building nestled in downtown Weston, but what it lacks in curb appeal, it more than makes up for in cuisine appeal. The menu features creative, beautifully prepared dishes, like crab cake meatballs, chicken lasagna with gouda, and coffee-rubbed filet.
